The SEC: Lone Superpower

The ACC had their shot last year. A bit of leverage with Notre Dame, and things could be looking pretty different right now headed into the 2021 season. But alas, no gutsy moves were made. And now the ACC, and others shrink before what will be the undisputed power conference in the nation. The S.E.C.

Sure, the other conferences will make moves. In particular the Big Ten first I'm sure. But beyond those two conferences, what power can the others consistently bring? Is the B1G THAT good? The remaining conferences will be doing all they can to schedule outside conference matchups with the "big boys", in hopes of gaining more exposure and growing their programs. Otherwise, they are relegated to becoming regional entities.

But, onto the Big Ten. What happens next? Well, think of old school Russia vs United States. Two massive superpowers that continue jockeying, moving & building for any edge. Any advantage. But, maybe the B1G isn't the superpower they believe. The SEC has taken a huge first leap. Rumors are spinning already regarding what moves the B1G will make. Do they add Iowa State and West Virginia? Being honest, does the B1G benefit from adding more teams that have a very slim chance of being playoff contenders? Of course not every team can be a playoff team, but currently the B1G AND the SEC have an issue: only seven teams have even MADE it to their respective Championship Games since 2011. In nine years, Ohio State has won five titles. Alabama has won six titles. Since 2011 the SEC has won six National Championships. ACC, three. B1G? Just one.

The point? I intentionally started out looking towards the ACC as not on par. Yet, the ACC has won more National Titles than the Big Ten. And that's what counts, right? So the Big Ten takes in West Virginia, that has had two ten win seasons since 2011, and Iowa State which has a total one nine win season since 2011. How does this improve the conference overall? Yes, TV markets and expanded recruiting footprint in conference.

The SEC gets Oklahoma with five 11 win or better seasons in last six years. Texas has one ten win season since 2011.So why not go all in for Notre Dame? Virginia Tech? Poach the ACC? Get gutsy. Compete with the SEC/Oklahoma move. "Nuke for nuke".

The SEC making this move puts pressure on the Big Ten in particular. They have already lagged behind the other conferences in the Big Game. Now it's made even tougher. The Big Ten has to get gutsy and aggressive, and do it now. Or there will only be ONE superpower. The SEC.
